Emergency Management (EMD)

Emergency Management (EMD)

Joseph S. Hebert is Canterbury's Emergency Management Director, or EMD.  He coordinates, along with the First Selectman, Public Works Department and Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, our Town's preparation for, and response to, potential natural and man-made disasters.

To support this effort, emergency generators have been installed at the Town shelter (Dr. Helen Baldwin Middle School), First Response Center (Fire Department) and Command and Operations Center (Town Hall Community Room). Emergency communications equipment has also been installed in the Community Center.

We are in the process of coordinating a number of training opportunities for citizens to become qualified in support of emergency management functions. Several Canterbury residents have graduated from CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training and will be helping to coordinate training in Canterbury.  The EMD will be planning training sessions in NIMS (National Incident Management Systems), which provides a framework for coordinating all of the various agencies involved in responding to emergencies.

Details on CERT and NIMS can be found by accessing the following websites: and

Newsletters from the State Emergency and Homeland Security Department are downloadable from our web site.

Anyone interested in helping in these efforts can contact the Canterbury Selectmen's Office at 860-546-9693, or Joseph Hebert at 860-710-2207, or e-mail at
